“What can we learn from those who came before us, and what do we owe them in return?”

The Ghost of the Mountain Kings grew from my wishing this question had an answer. I went to school on the grounds of the former Mount Lebanon Shaker Village, and in some sense I never left. The Shakers were long gone by the time I arrived, but the place they created made an impression that has only deepened in the decades since. I now serve on the board of the school that exists in its place. Every visit, I'm struck by the absence of the people who built the stone walls, danced and sang in the meetinghouse, and worked the fields…and by the strange ways their presence reveals itself in time.

Jarek's journey is the one I wish I could take. I hope you'll join him.
